Calum runs an Architects practice, CDAL, in Edinburgh, working across Scotland on residential, educational and community related projects. CDAL are passionate about reimagining buildings and spaces to meet the needs of the users and provide energy efficient design proposals which are distinctive in character.
Reimagining is a guiding principle for Calum’s practice, where the design of homes, buildings, places and spaces are rigorously considered, then careful and creative design solutions are developed, working closely with the clients. Solutions work to improve the function of spaces and efficiency of the building fabric to make homes and places which are not necessarily bigger, but are more delightful, more energy efficient, have improved connection to the outdoors and better daylight and sunlight; while using natural, locally sourced and characterful materials.
Calum has worked on several award-winning buildings including 4 RIBA award-winners and the first refurbished or listed building to achieve BREEAM Outstanding. Calum also leads a project called Archischools; working to empower and engage our young citizens in the design and politics of the built environment and is chair of the board at Play Scotland.
